Second, make patterns out of paper, cloth, foam board, whatever, but make about three before you even cut your leather. You want to be confident that it will fit. Make your soles skinnier than you think you need to (max. the width of your foot), and longer than you think.
It will probably take a few messed-up shoes before you make a pair you're satisfied with. Note that I sold the pair shown because they were too small. That's always something you can do.
