I thought it fitting to post this, as it does have something to do with both the Middle Ages and crafts. I made this project in Jewelry/Metals class at Kent State University (quite a fun and useful class, despite my low grade).
I used brass, copper, and nickel. The brass is the yellow, the copper is the orange, and the nickel is the anvil and sword. You can see that the anvil/sword thing is all one piece. I achieved the effect by blackening, then taping, sandblasting, then polishing the sword.
The portcullis is also copper, sandblasted, and the background is etched and heat treated copper.

I would love to see a detail shot of the sword, anvil, and background.
What is it? What metals did you use?
